Hey there Mike. I am very glad that I found your website. We got our 1 yr old black lab 3 weeks ago and are struggling with house breaking. It is mainly chewing and jumping up that he has problems with. We got him from a pound and do not know his history since he was found on the road. I am not sure that he has every been inside cause his manners are poor. We have a farm but would like to train him to be inside so we can enjoy each others company. So far when brought inside he gets into trouble and is put out after about 15 min. I feel that when he is in ( I have him attached to me at all times) all I do is nag the leave it or off command at him. I have been studying your self help and will try the 'gods'. My questions to start are:
1. How can I keep him inside for longer than 10-15 min ( it is easy to put him out when we all get overwhelmed but I don't want to fall into out of mind out of sight scene. We do tie him outside when things get too hectic). He doesn't like to be crated since his bad cage experience at the pound. I give him things to chew but once they expire he is back at it, also very excited to be inside.
2.If I use the gods to stop him from jumping do I say the command with it and use verbal praise?
I do try to exercise him as much as I can ( I also have 2 young children ) but as you know those labs are like wound up toys...not to mention trying to keep him out of my compost pile...
I am very impressed with your style of training and hope that I can use it with the help of this site since I am writing form Canada... Thanks.Joanna
