    Default Dogtra e-collar and GSD

Hi, I just joined the website. I have a 9 YOA GSD, a 5 YOA Basenji and a new 6 month old GSD. My older dogs are well trained but do have some issues I would like to tweek. I would love to be able to walk them with thier full attention on myself like in your videos. I have used an e-collar in the past with mixed results. The main problem was the collar was not effective 100% of the time. it was like it was not making full contact everytime. i tried making it tighter and moving the collar up and down i also used longer prongs to get through my GSD's long coat. I beleive it must have been the brand. I would lioke to start my new GSD out with a different e-collar for obdience training. He is well versed in level 1 training, and responds 90% of the time around small distractions, but i would like him to respond around more distractions more reliably. Which dogtra product would you recommend for a large breed long haired GSD? I dont need one that goes very far, as I am only going to be using it for obedience. I have been looking at the dogtra line and on some sites it says the the 175ncp is for small-med breeds and other sites state med-large breeds. thank you for any recommendations.

    Hi Candice,

Welcome to the site. I would recommend the dogtra 2300. I have one listed in the recommended training tools at the bottom of the page. The 175 can sometimes fall short of what you need if your German Shepherd gets highly distracted (with the combo of the long hair) and the dog wont react. The other plus with the 2300 is that it charges in 2 hours as opposed to 14 hours, and there is a digital display on the controller so that you can better fine tune the stim.

For contact points - be sure to obtain 3/4 inch points. That's what we use at the kennel for all shepherds.

There are other models that will work too, but the 2300 has the best combo of useful features for the price and is very versatile whether using it for in the home or out on a hike.

    Any questions let me know...
