I've just been watching some videos and something I wondered since I started my own dog's training is the practising indoors. During his class, and indoors, or even in the yard, my dog is doing great in his exercises (heel, recall, walk/stop), I see lots of improvement. But when I go on a walk, it all (except the recall) goes out the window. I've only just started training...so what I'm wondering is...I still hvae to walk him, I was worried that walking him and only working on leash manners and not the rest, was somehow ruining his training. The alternative is not to walk him which isn't an option.

Is his practising indoors, without all the distraction, still the appropriate build up? Or do I have to work on it always on walks outdoors as well. He's 7mths (got him at 4mths) and is very excited on walks, pulls ahead, rushes to meet/smell people, a handful. Is it a good length of time practising indoors before what he learns starts to outweigh the distractions of the outdoors?

Obedience outside with all the distractions would be very difficult at this stage. So definitely good to focus first on making sure the pup understands the concepts of all the obedience first, before worrying about the walk. What type of training collar do you use at this point. I would suggest a no pull harness for now outside with a young dog (or any dog at this stage). The type that you clip the leash by the front of the chest - so if the dog pulls they end up turning.
