Training Methods Used

Q.Why choose K9-1 Specialized Dog Training?
Ans.Over the years we have had countless clients who were not satisfied with the methods, knowledge, patience, honesty, professionalism, or results of their previous trainer or behaviorist. Many dogs labeled as 'too set in their ways" or difficult become the pride of their owners after working with us. Our reputation of being the last resort for many dogs is the same reason why veterinarians and past clients just refer to us first.

Q.What training methods does K9-1 use?
Ans.The quick answer is that we use them all. Every dog is different so we are trained in virtually every method that is out there as well as some of our unique methods found no where else. The corner stone of our training program is based on KNOWLEDGE of dog behavior and treating every dog with the RESPECT all of God's creatures deserve. We then make a plan from there. Generally, positive reinforcement based methods are used first to teach trust and exactly what actions we want from them, and then we teach responsibility through gentle corrective based training to create reliability in all environments. To be sure every dog completes their course with a wagging tail and aura of confidence all dogs and their people will receive the PATIENCE they deserve. We do not cram obedience or muscle the dogs around. Your dog should have trust in you as their teacher.

Q.My dog isn't aggressive, fearful, or difficult. Is K9-1 overkill for my needs?
Ans.Absolutely not. The same patient techniques apply to any dog that wants high quality training and will act as a preventative to any potential behavioral problem.

Q.Does K9-1 use pinch, electric, or other "harsh" correction collars?
Ans.Pinch collars and electric collars are amoung two of the most widely abused training collars on the market. As experienced professionals we can teach you how to humanely use most of the training collars on the market at the appropriate time for the appropriate dog. This includes how to use these two widely misunderstood devices. When used correctly with the foundation style dog training method, you will be surprised at how gentle these collars can be used as part of a training program. Rough handling, harsh corrections, intimidiation, and raised voices should NEVER be part of a dog training curriculum.

Q.How does K9-1 feel about using treats during training?
Ans.Treats, like toys, are a great way to motivate a dog and are used extensively during the training process to initially shape behavior and help the dog enjoy the training sessions (which can sometimes be repetitive). Treats should be phased out by the end of the training program and mostly replaced with praise and contact as the dogs' rewards, which is always at hand during real life handling. Treats are also used during ongoing desensitizing exercises and as an extra reward in especially challanging real life scenarios.

Q.What is so unique about K9-1's foundation training style?
Ans.The foundation training style is EXTREMELY technical but at the same time is explained in layman's terms. It is a completely different way of troubleshooting behavioral problems and teaching obedience that focuses on getting the most reliable results possible while maintaining a respectful relationship with the dog. The style is forever evolving to reflect any new techniques that prove to work better. This style is currently not taught in any behavioral colleges or formal dog training schools. It is unique only to those who have been specifically trained in this method from this web site, K9-1 Specialized Dog Training LLC directly, or any of the trainers certified in this method through K9-1.
